Karen James Cody is a content writer based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
The Allyson Group, her own practice, has been in business since 1994. She was formerly the Communications Director at Bloomberg BNA (The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. 1994-2013), a leading publisher of specialized print and electronic news and information for professionals in business and government.
Karen’s communications experience includes strategic planning, media relations, internal (employee/shareholder) communications, marketing communications support, graphic design project management, environmental technical writing, and academic and technical editing. She also writes and edits fiction.
Current professional memberships include Black Women Playwrights’ Group of Washington, D.C. (board member) and the American News Women’s Club (member, former board member, president 2001-2003).
She was a long-time member of the National Press Club; the Society of Professional Journalists; the Washington Association of Black Journalists; the International Association of Business Communications; the Public Relations Society of America; and the Black Public Relations Society of America. She was also on the boards of D.C.’s For Love of Children and the Fred Taylor Scholarship Program, a program of FLOC.
Karen holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Francisco State University. She has two grown daughters and lives in Takoma Park, Maryland.
